Color of Money

Joe Ades -- a/k/a the "Carrot Peeler Guy" -- was a New York City legend. For years he sold his wares on Gotham's sidewalks, most notably at Union Square's Greenmarket, and was always found with his stained hands, infallible smile, indelible charm, impeccable dress and unmistakable accent/delivery.

It might take a feature-length film to pay tribute to the whole of his fascinating life, but this photo admirably encapsulates the magic of his street performances: his regal clothes in a subservient posture, the shadows of the crowds that always gathered to see him, and the signature tones of the carrots' orange and the green cash that always pervaded his scene.
