Street Chess

New York’s Union Square is an urban oasis teeming with life – from the colorful characters who inhabit its innards to the myriad food vendors of its farmers’ market to the chess hustlers who coyly wait to test the mettle of bold passers-by.

Homeless men move kings and queens on makeshift boards with weathered pieces; it may be a grift and they may be hustlers but at least the challenge I one of skill rather than trickery. This street player patiently waits for some cocky tourist who will leave with a few less dollars and one more story.
